French Départements

Local government in France is based on a 3-tier system, with 22 régions, comprising in all 96 départements, which between them consist of some 36 500 communes. They are (mostly) numbered alphabetically.

French vehicles have to be registered in their home département, which can be identified by the number plate. Usually a French vehicle registration comprises four digits, followed by two letters, followed by the 2-digit département number.
